Any type of exercise that makes the heart beat may reduce the risk of dementia and would slow down the progression of the disease once it starts, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in “Mayo Clinic Proceedings.” Scientists examined the role of aerobic exercise to conserve cognitive abilities and concluded that it should not be overlooked as important therapy against dementia.

Scientists offered a broad definition of exercise as aerobic activity that enough to raise heart rate and increase the body’s need for oxygen. Examples include walking, or gymnastics and home activities such as shoveling snow or raking leaves.

“We selected among all the scientific literature found on the topic of exercise and cognition, including animal studies and observation, reviewing more than 1,600 jobs, 130 of which directly address the issue,” says Mayo Clinic neurologist, Dr . J. Eric Ahlskog. “The conclusion reached was that you can formulate a convincing argument to the effect that exercise is a modification of the tactics for avoiding disease dementia and mild cognitive impairment, as well as modifying these processes favorably once have developed. ” Scientists note that brain imaging studies consistently have shown objective evidence of the beneficial effects of exercise on the integrity of the human brain. Also, note that animal research has shown that exercise generates trophic factors that enhance brain function, except that the exercise makes the brain connections (neuroplasticity).

The study’s authors say that while more research is needed on the relationship between exercise and cognitive function, they promote exercise in general and especially among those who have concerns cognitive in nature.

“No matter if the patient serves as a general practitioner or a neurological clinic, they should continue to promote exercise not only general health, but also cognitive,” adds Dr. Ahlskog.
